Background of the study
Digital communication platforms have reshaped traditional syntax by introducing new forms of textual expression. In Nigeria, Facebook comments and Twitter threads serve as prominent examples where users adapt language to meet the constraints of each medium. Facebook comments, often lengthy and interactive, tend to support complex sentence structures and creative punctuation, whereas Twitter threads, constrained by character limits, foster concise and innovative syntactic constructions (Ibrahim, 2023). This study compares these two modes of digital communication, examining how platform-specific features influence syntactic choices among Nigerian users. It explores factors such as interactivity, immediacy, and audience engagement, which drive the emergence of non-standard syntax. The research investigates how these digital formats contribute to the evolution of language, challenging conventional grammatical rules and prompting new linguistic models (Okafor, 2024). By providing a comparative analysis, the study aims to deepen our understanding of how social media platforms drive syntactic innovation and influence broader language practices.
Statement of the problem
Despite the evident syntactic creativity in digital communication, research has seldom compared the syntactic structures of Facebook comments and Twitter threads in the Nigerian context. Existing studies often focus on one platform or general digital language trends, neglecting the specific syntactic variations imposed by differing digital affordances. This gap limits our ability to understand how specific platform constraints shape language use and impede the formulation of effective models of digital syntax (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative evaluation of digital syntax on two major social media platforms, providing insights into how language adapts to different digital contexts. The findings will inform educators and linguists on evolving communication practices in Nigeria.
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to Nigerian Facebook comments and Twitter threads, excluding other platforms and offline communication.
